Hello again. I've been absent from the running scene in Austin for a number of years and am working towards re-joining that world over the next 6 months. I am excited to start sharing my progress on this blog since it will keep me accountable and provide some entertainment for future days as have my other running blogs from the past.

My goals this time around are many. My fitness goal is to run consistently again and train for a marathon in the next 12-18 months that will be a BQ for the 2019 Boston Marathon. For my age group (50-55) this translates to a 3:30 marathon - or a pace of 8.01 per mile. Funny enough, my first 'race' was the Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot this past Thursday and my pace was... 8.02 for 5 miles. So I think with proper training, nutrition, and attitude, I can hopefully run that pace or faster for an upcoming marathon in the next year.

My challenges include attitude and ego, weight, a general lack of fitness, and sciatica. So first steps include PT and some refining of diet as well as a structured core strength program. I have tried to come back to running many times over the last 4-5 years but each time hit a snag - work schedule, pulled calf, etc-

I think joining a running group again will be a positive step to keeping me accountable. So, I will be rejoining Gilbert's Gazelle's in December as a way to take care of myself.

One of the biggest issues I have is remembering who I am, not who I was. My past as a runner was successful. For example, I won my division for the Turkey Trot 2 or 3 times back in the mid 2000's and regularly ran it under 30 minutes. The memories of who I was are always intruding on who I am. So remembering that I am a 52 year old, out of shape, lump of a runner who is content with slow gains over months rather than days will be key.

I did run 4 miles today.

I ran at lunch. It took me about 90 minutes total to drive to lake, run 4 miles , and drive back. Not efficient and no towel so I am salty right now. Good times.

My mileage goal for this week is to run 15-20 miles by Sunday. All easy.
